Celebration of Nowruz throughout the Reception and Asylum Centers in Serbia

20.03.2019. In the reception and asylum centers throughout Serbia, in a festive atmosphere and in accordance with tradition, Iranian New Year - Nowruz was celebrated.

Nowruz is on the list of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2009. Although the celebration is most impressive in Iran itself, it is also marked in many other countries, as well as throughout the centers of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, where migrants from Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria are accomodated.

Traditional dishes were displaced on the "haft sin" table, while music and joy filled the centers, as migrants were celebrating Nowruz gathered around bonfires for "chaharshanbe suri."

Schoolchildren from the Reception Center in Bujanovac who attend the elementary school "Branko Radicevic" shared candy with their peers and told them how they celebrate this important holiday.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), as well as the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), helped organize the celebration.
