Commissioner for Refugees and Migration Natasa Stanisavljevic delivered a lecture at the Criminal Police University

Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia Nataša Stanisavljević today visited the Criminal Police University, where she delivered a lecture on migration in order to raise the quality of the teaching process and encourage cooperation between institutions. The lecture was attended by 60 final year students of the university.

As a guest lecturer on the topic “Migrants and Migrant Women in the Republic of Serbia - Current Matters and Perspectives” Commissioner Stanisavljević introduced the students of the University to different types of migration and the fact that the Commissariat takes care of the accommodation of migrants in 19 reception and transit centres, 16 of which are currently active and where they are provided with a sufficient amount of food, blankets, clothing, medical care, legal and other types of assistance.

“The Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia takes care of migrants in reception and asylum centres where 2,523 people are currently accommodated. The five most represented migrants’ countries of origin are Afghanistan, Morocco, Pakistan, Syria and Burundi and 89% are adult men. Admission to the centres is based on a registration certificate issued by an authorized police officer, in accordance with the Law. Apart from the centres managed by the Commissariat our responsibility is also to ensure the material conditions for the reception of asylum seekers, implementation of the program of voluntary return of foreigners to their country of origin as well as integration program of persons to whom asylum has been granted”, Nataša Stanisavljević said.

Commissioner Stanisavljević introduced the students to the asylum system in the Republic of Serbia, definitions and differences between migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons from Kosovo and Metohija as well as how to regulate refugee status, who are the competent authorities in the asylum procedure, what are the rights and obligations of asylum seekers, what are the types of international protection and the legal framework in the Republic of Serbia.

During the lecture the students were shown a presentation that contained comprehensive statistics. After the lecture Commissioner Nataša Stanisavljević met Professor Dr. Zoran Đurđević, Rector of the Criminal Police University, and future cooperation was discussed.
