Contracts for the purchase of 22 farmhouses with a yard for refugee families from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia officially presented in Becej

24.09.2019. In Becej, on September 24th, 2019, contracts were officially handed over for the purchase of 22 farmhouses to refugee families from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia residing in the territory of that municipality. The houses were purchased under the Regional Housing Program (RSP) in the Republic of Serbia.

The total value of the houses purchased is € 242,000, and funds are provided from the donor Fund of the Regional Housing Program, the largest donor of which is the European Union. The value of the donation for each house is 11,000 euros.

The award ceremony was attended by Veljko Odalovic, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dragan Tosic, Mayor of Becej Municipality, Ivan Gerginov, Assistant Commissioner for Refugees and Migration, Bojan Stevic, State Secretary at the Ministry of State Administration and Local Government, John Clayton, Head of Department for Democratization of the OSCE, Jadranka Maric, UNHCR Representative, Jelena Tomic, JUP Representative, and others.

 "More than 2,500 refugees came to Becej during the 1990s. And they are all well received. The Regional Housing Program in Becej provided housing to close to one hundred most vulnerable refugee families, and another 27 families received assistance from the budget of the Republic of Serbia, ”said Ivan Gerginov, thanking the local government for its excellent co-operation in joint work.

The Regional Housing Program is a joint multi-year program of the Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and the Republic of Croatia, which aims to provide permanent housing solutions for the most vulnerable refugee families in the region. It is supported by the OSCE, UNHCR and the Council of Europe Development Bank, and is funded by the European Union, which is the largest donor, the United States, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Luxembourg, Spain , Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
