Twenty refugees from Vrnjacka Banja receive keys to their newly built homes under RHP

05.08.2019. The keys to 20 apartments for refugee families from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia residing in the territory of the Vrnjacka Banja Municipality were handed over today, under the fourth subproject of the Regional Housing Programme in the Republic of Serbia. A total of three buildings are constructed, two with eight apartments each and one with four apartments.

Funding for the construction of these 20 apartments was provided in part by a RHP donor fund, managed by the Council of Europe Development Bank, while communal infrastructure and the plot are a contribution of the Vrnjacka Banja Municipality.

The event was attended by Ivica Dacic, First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Commission for Coordination of the Process of Permanent Integration of Refugees, Vladimir Cucic, Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia, Boban Djurovic, Mayor of Vrnjacka Banja, Steffen Hudolin, Representative of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, Hans F. Shodder, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. and UNHCR Representative, Dragan Katuca, Director of the Project Implementation Unit in Public Sector, as well as representatives of other national and international organizations and beneficiaries.

"As the implementation of the Regional Housing Program project is well underway, I am honored and very pleased to participate nearly on a weekly basis in the ceremonial awarding of keys to families who, after more than twenty years since the end of the wars in the former Yugoslavia, have been given the opportunity for permanent care in the Republic of Serbia. By opening the doors of their new homes, they have closed the door to all the painful memories of the persecution from their homes, the loss of loved ones, and all the suffering, ”said Minister Dacic.

Commissioner for Refugees and Migration, Vladimir Cucic, thanked the First Deputy Prime Minister and all the RHP participants, as well as the representatives of the local self-government who have been astute to the needs and suffering of refugees since the very beginning.

"Vrnjacka Banja is one of those municipalities that received a large number of refugees in the 1990s, it had three collective centers and was among the first to provide housing to the most vulnerable refugee families," said Cucuć and wished all beneficiaries a long and prosperous life in new homes.
