20.01.2023.

The Deputy Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia, Svetlana Velimirovic, and Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Serbia, Stefanie Krause attended today the handover of the UNHCR donation which was preceded by the signing of the contract at the Asylum Centre in Obrenovac.

The donation valued at 11,009,997 RSD (100,066 USD) is intended for the functioning of the Centres managed by the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration which contain equipment and technology comprising forklifts, furniture, appliances, computer equipment, mattresses and bedding.

Deputy Commissioner for Refugees and Migration Svetlana Velimirovic thanked the UNHCR for their donation and expressed her delight with the successful cooperation thus far with hope that it will continue in the future.

“UNHCR is one of the largest and most important partners with whom the Commissariat has been cooperating for 30 years. Through joint cooperation we take care of more than 3,000 migrants who are currently accommodated in our Centres. Many thanks for this donation as well as for all other donations which help us to make stay of the Beneficiaries in our Centres easier. Although the number of migrants transiting through Serbia has increased compared to the same period last year Serbia has shown responsibility in taking care of them, we stand for a comprehensive solution to the current migrant crisis,'' the Commissioner pointed out.

In words of Stefanie Krause, Head of the UNHCR in Serbia, the Republic of Serbia and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration successfully manage migration and UNHCR will continue to support the efforts with donations to ensure that the Beneficiaries of the Centres always have the necessary funds.

"UNHCR advocates harmonization of reception conditions in line with national and international standards, with a special focus on accommodation conditions and services for socially vulnerable groups. We are happy that we can help our long-term partner Commissariat with a donation. We hope this donation helps the employees in the Centres in their daily work and ensures a more comfortable life for the Beneficiaries,'' said Stefanie Krause.

On the territory of the Republic of Serbia, there are 5 Asylum Centres and 14 Reception Centres where 2,898 people currently reside. Latest Commissariat statistics show that 124,127 migrants were registered in Reception and Asylum Centres in 2022.

During 2022, the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia worked responsibly and humanely all people under the jurisdiction of the Commissariat, and we will continue with such a policy in the coming year.
